Pathfinder Walk: Jun 2006/March 2007
Most recent walk: March 2007
The Millenium Folly walk takes Historic Greenwich as its starting point, following the river past the Millenium Dome, the David Beckham footballing academy, the Thames Flood Barrier, and then crosses the Thames via the Woolwich ferry or foot tunnel. From here, we call at The City of London aerodrome, and The Queen’s (Royal Victoria) Dock and the Excellent Centre with all it’s attendant pageantry and fayres. Finally, a trip over the Bow Creek leads us to the Isle of Dogs and London’s fine dockland heritage, and the Greenwich foot tunnel leads us back to Cutty Sark and some fine-ass hostelries.
Details:
This could not be simpler. Start next to the Greenwich foot tunnel on the south bank, and follow the Thames path east (via the Dome, the Beckham Academy and the Thames Barrier) until the Woolwich ferry/foot tunnel. Here, traverse the river and head along pier road, store road and cross over the railway line and head west along Albert Road. From here, make your way up to Connaught Bridge and pass down to the north side of the docks, heading west. Cross over the footbridge to the south side and continue, passing under the underpass and onto Dock Road. Follow this to the north end, and get onto Lower Lea crossing, passing over the Lower Lea (aka Bow Creek) and exit onto the East India Dock Basin, which is a very pretty nature reserve/pond. From here, follow the river in a south/west direction down to Island Gardens (the park) and cross over the river again via the foot tunnel to Greenwich.
