Slightly shorter than expected, but fun nevertheless…

 This charming ramble followed the Lea River from Tottenham Hale, peeling off near Victoria Park to visit the park and follow the canal to Limehouse, down the Thames to Canary Wharf and through the docks and the foot-tunnel to Greenwich and a hearty repast of jewels of the orient. Noodles to you modernist chappies.

This was a lovely, if hot ramble. I would recommend this to any urban rambler who likes a mix of surroundings with a lot of greenery in the early reaches of Keston.

Great weather, wonderful scenery, digestive disorders – what more could a rambler want? Teddington to Hampton Court, and thence to Richmond and – for those brave adventurers – Kew. Photogrammatic cartography here:

The Steamweb

Urban Ramblers never say die!

Saturday 27th January saw three Urban Ramblers (a first time probationer, a fellow, and a founder member) set off and completed the Waddon to Wandsworth Wandle Wander. The route, as the name suggests, follows the River Wandle from its source in Waddon, via a secondary source in Carshalton, via Morden and Merton Abbey Mills to Wandworth. Here are the ramblers in Waddon:

Shortly after the lunchtime kickoff.

After an initially bright start, the afternoon remained clement and reasonably pleasant, if not as sunny as hoped. There was a very pleasant leg through Beddington park and Carshalton Ponds; the aptly named Wilderness Island delighted us all with its charms:

But we were in for a nasty surprise before we reached Morden Hall park. The recent storms had tried to thwart our ramble!

But to no avail! Gentleman Urban Ramblers are made of sterner stuff. And soon we were on our way. After a brief sojourn to a local hostelry, we strode on, and at around 5pm we met the Thames with the Wandle leashed to our stern.

So, this is a proposed two-stage walk. It hasn’t yet been done.

The first stage is the Parkland Walk, following the disused railway lines from Ally Pally to Finsbury Park. This is ~8km and expected to take approx. two hours.

The second stage, still in the planning process, will take a route south from Finsbury Park via Highbury, Islington, Clerkenwell, The City and St Pauls, ending on the south side of the Millenium bridge.
